Angelique Series Review: Find out what kids think about Angelique's adventures.

Buffalo Hunt
by Cora Taylor

This is one book you wouldn’t want to miss! This book takes place on the Plains in a Métis camp. Angelique is a young girl with a French father and an Aboriginal mother. She has a teasing brother who always calls her “buffalo eyes”. And then there is Michif, a buffalo runner horse owned by her father. He is the fastest horse in the camp, and he is a treasure to Angelique, her father, and the whole camp who depend on fast horses to chase after the buffalo so that the hunters can capture it. On this day, Angelique will participate in the buffalo hunt. She will go with other children in the camp to stand beside her father’s fallen buffalo. The different families each have a glove with a different symbol. Angelique will stand beside the fallen buffalo so her mother can start getting it prepared to store and eat. She does her job well. But one day Angelique wanders just a little too far. She finds herself in a buffalo stampede! Luckily, she is rescued just in time by her father and Michif. But Michif is gored by the buffalo. Her father thinks he won’t recover.
But Angelique knows he will. She takes good care of him, and he begins to recuperate. Can he fully recover? Will he still be the best, and her father’s, buffalo runner? This book is sure to enlighten all. I would say it is the best book of the OUR CANADIAN GIRL series! Don’t miss it!

Buffalo Hunt Highs and Lows

Highs
This book was exciting an easy to read. Unlike other Cora Taylor novels this one is not as advanced and if you enjoy books like Little House on the Prairie that take place in the past this book may appeal to you. I would definitely recommend this book to younger readers.

Lows
Though you may not care, there is one inaccuracy in this book. The story was supposed to take place in 1877 but on the back it says it takes place in 1887. Unless you are doing research using this book then you're fine. Other than that this is an entirely accurate book and it’s fun to read too. Hint: a second book is coming out soon!

The Long Way home
By Cora Taylor

Angelique is back! This time, her family and camp are out on a Buffalo hunt on the Plains, away from home. Seeing strange figures on their way, Angelique is worried about her father’s lovely horse, Michif. Although she has never ridden him, she loves him very much.

One night, while Angelique and her friend Francois are watching their horses, horse raiders come! They steal Angelique’s beloved Michif, and she is not about to let him go! She and her friend Francois mount his pony, Pisiskees, and run ahead to see which direction the horse raiders went. To her surprise, her little brother followed them. Her brother fell off his horse, and his pony ran off. Now, all three had to go on poor Pisiskees. On their way home, they are captured by the horse raiders themselves! As they are held in the raider’s camp, Angelique sees Michif and gets an idea. Could she ride Michif and get help? She isn’t supposed to ride a hunter’s horse, but isn’t it necessary? Would Michif come to her? Could she escape? To find the answers, read the book yourself.

The first book was wonderful and exciting, but this book brings it to the next level. Out of 10, I would give this book 11!
